Focus on Disparities

A major aim of U.S. health care policy is to improve the quality of care in the Nation. To accomplish this goal, the socioeconomic, racial, ethnic, and gender inequalities that exist in access, treatment, and outcomes of care must be addressed. This section includes data on disparities in ambulatory care based on potentially preventable hospitalizations for selected conditions and hospital care using measures of inpatient mortality and potentially avoidable complications.
